USA CHESTNUT GROWERS COOPERATIVE, INC. is a cooperative made up by ten member
growers in Georgia and Florida and combined have 110 acres of beautiful chestnut trees. These trees produced approximately 23,000 lbs of fresh sweet chestnuts in 2008. The oldest orchard is fifteen years old. None of these ten farms use pesticide and currently two of the members are certified organic.
In 1904 American Chestnuts were more numerous east of the Mississippi than Oak trees, when Chinese Chestnuts were imported into the United States, which had a blight that over about twenty-five years killed almost all of the American Chestnuts. Due to that ecological disaster chestnuts disappeared from the American diet. Only in the past fifteen 
years has there been an effort to bring chestnuts back into the American diet. About thirty or so growers in isolated areas of the United States began to plant small orchards and discover how to grow Chinese Chestnuts. Small pockets of chestnut orchards are found in Michigan, Washington, California, Ohio, Delaware, Georgia, and Florida. These family owned orchards are growing and educating the public about the wonderful Nutritious Chestnut. Chestnuts have been called the grain that grows on a tree.
